1 HEREDITY VOCABULARY 8th GRADE SCIENCE

2

3 hybrid (noun) Latin the offspring of two animals  or plants of different breeds.

4

5 Punnett square (noun) Letters represent dominant and recessive alleles, upper case represents dominant and lower case stands for recessive.

6

7 genotype (noun) German
the genetic makeup of an organism or  group of organisms with reference to a single trait, set of traits,  or an entire complex of traits.

8

9 phenotype (noun) German
the appearance of an organism  resulting from the interaction  of  the genotype and the environment.

10 What are alleles? What trait appears in the first generation? What trait appears in the second generation? Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk who lived in the 1800’s is known as the father of genetics. Explain why Mendel was given this title.

11 Describe how dominant and recessive alleles are represented in a Punnett square.
Explain the difference between genotype and phenotype. Give an example for each. Alleles are described as being dominate or recessive. What is the difference between a dominant and a recessive allele? Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk who lived in the 1800’s is known as the father of genetics. Explain why Mendel was given this title.

12 How much hereditary information do you get from each parent?
Three out of 30 people have dimples. What percent of this population has this trait? What would be a “learned trait”? Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk who lived in the 1800’s is known as the father of genetics. Explain why Mendel was given this title.
