Why BURP? Pat R. Calhoun Sun Microsystems, Inc. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Why is BURP needed? The cellular standards currently call for PPP to be used between Mobile Nodes and Foreign Agents. PPP was basically chosen because it is an IETF protocol, without regard for the problems it creates in handoffs. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Why not PPP? PPP consists of many components: LCP – This is used to negotiate link parameters, and none are negotiated in the cellular world. Auth – PPP’s Authentication phase is bypassed, and Mobile IP authentication is used instead. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Why not PPP (cont)? IPCP – IPCP is used to negotiate a NULL address, since Mobile IP is used to assign home addresses to mobiles. CCP – Compression is negotiated. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

So what is used in PPP? HDLC framing Compression negotation 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

6 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Why is PPP Bad? The nature of mobility services cause mobiles to handoff across access points during handoffs. The number of messages required to establish IPCP requires a high number of round trips. If context transfer is done, PPP has a lot of state, and has sequencing requirements. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

What is needed? A lightweight user registration protocol that: Includes auth, re-auth and disconnect message. Contains minimal state, all of which can be transferred. Compression negotiation. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Other customers? In my opinion, one of the major reasons Mobile IPv6 hasn’t been adopted by some cellular bodies is the fact that there is no longer a point of controlling access. The BURP protocol would allow the first hop router to perform this function. 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

What I’d like to see… As I’ve stated on the list, I’d like to see a simple protocol be added to existing Network Access Servers. The end result would look and smell like a NAS, but with a different ingress interface (BURP instead of PPP). 11/15/2018 Pat R. Calhoun - Sun Microsystems, Inc.
