Science Starter Open your SISN to your atmosphere title page.
Answer the 5 essential questions on your title page. Did you have legit trouble with any of the questions???
2
Heat Transfer and Global Winds
Vocabulary Heat Transfer and Global Winds
3
Vocabulary Kim Chart Set up a KIM chart (like we did for the atmosphere unit) with 9 words
4
Radiation Definition: Energy transferred through empty space as electromagnetic (light) waves; typically from sun. Examples: tanning is radiation from the sun Pic:
5
Convection Definition: Transfer of energy when air or water of different temperatures rise and fall. Colder, denser material sinks while warmer less dense materails start rise. Examples: boiling water Facts/Characteristics: dense=sinks; less dense=rise
6
Conduction Definition: Transfer of energy in the form of heat within an object by direct contact. Examples: how a pot warms on the stove; heat transferred from bottom up through the pot Facts/Characteristics: Moves from hot to cold areas
7
Global winds Definition: The dominant wind patterns that blow in a fairly constant, steady direction across our Earth. Examples: trade winds, westerlies, polar easterlies Facts/Characteristics: named for direction in which they blow from
8
Jet stream Definition: Narrow band of very strong, westerly air currents that circle the globe. Examples: polar jet stream Facts/Characteristics: can travel up to 100 mph; fast, narrow, winding Pic:
9
Doldrums Definition: Areas at the equator that have little to no wind.
Facts/Characteristics: Located along the equator
10
Coriolis Effect Definition: Appearance of wind to look curved or deflected due to the rotation of Earth below a layer of gas. Examples: hurricanes turn left (counterclockwise) in northern hemisphere and right (clockwise) in southern hemisphere Facts/Characteristics: effects weather & ocean currents; result of earth's rotation Pic:
11
Greenhouse gases Definition: Gasses that trap heat in our atmosphere. These contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation (heat) produced by the solar warming of the Earth's surface. Examples: They include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (NO2), and water vapor Facts/Characteristics: trap heat which leads to an increase in temp (global warming) Pic:
12
Greenhouse Effect Definition: A natural warming of Earth due to the trapping of heat due to Earth’s atmosphere. Caused by gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane. Examples: greenhouses and sitting in cars-it gets hot! Facts/Characteristics: would not have weather without the Greenhouse effect Pic:
