fantasy The genre of fiction in which story elements defy the natural physical laws of our known world – events related to magic

archetype A perfect example of something.

characterization The creation and convincing representation of fictitious characters.

Universal theme The idea that holds the story together or the central meaning of a piece of writing.

plot Also called storyline. The plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work.

protagonist The leading character, hero, or heroine of a literary or dramatic work.

antagonist A person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another.

syntax The study of the rules for the formation of grammatical sentences in a language.

tone The attitude of the author towards a literary or dramatic work.

mood Background tone of a literary work; how it makes you feel.

technique Any method an author uses to convey their message.

conflict The struggle between two or more opposing forces.

resolution The part of the story in which the problems are solved and the action comes to an end.

sequence The following of one thing after another; succession.

denotative A word that names or signifies something specific: “Wind” is the denotation for air in natural motion. “Poodle” is the denotation for a certain breed of dog.

connotative The associated or secondary meaning of a word or expression in addition to its explicit or primary meaning: A possible connotation of “home” is “a place of warmth, comfort, and affection.”
