2. Missouri Compromise
To keep the states balanced, Missouri came into the Union as a slave state and Maine came in to the Unionas a free state
Henry Clay – known as “The Great Compromiser” proposed this compromise.

4. Compromise of 1850 Henry Clay proposed :
California come into the Union as a free state
Pass the Fugitive Slave Law
Slavery could be allowed in the territories gained from Mexico

5. Kansas – Nebraska Act Stephen Douglas proposed:
Let the people decide in this territory whether it should be free or slave

8. Stephen Douglass
Each state…. has a right to do as it pleases on… slavery

9. Abraham Lincoln
If slavery is not wrong, then nothing is wrong…[But I} would not do anything to bring about a war between the free and slave states.”
