La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat
Art Lesson Grade: 3 Activity: Keywords: Painting with Pointillism Pointillism, Neoimpressionism Supplies: white card stock cut to : 5 ½ x 8 ½” tempera paints Plates for paint pencils with new erasers Stencils Paper towels Colored construction paper Artist blurb Art Prep Guide: Make copies of artist blurb Cut cardstock to size Cut construction paper an inch bigger for matting Hands On Art: The “pointillism” technique can be a painstaking process. Tell the students it’s best to keep their drawing simple, so that they have time to finish Keep in mind the lesson is not about color mixing it’s about optical mixing. Make sure the students understand they need to overlap the primary colored dots next to each other in order to create a secondary color Using a pencil and a stencil, lightly sketch the object that will be filled in with dots. Using only the eraser, dip lightly into the paint on the plates, fill in the spaces. Blot the erasers on paper towels, if necessary to get rid of excess paint. Remind them that they want to see the individual dots up close, but from far away, they should blend together. So, have them get up periodically and look at their artwork from a few feet away. Encourage them to mix colors to create the right color on the paper plates. See how much of the paper can get filled with closely filled dots. Have them name and sign their masterpiece.
