Presentation on theme: "Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy"— Presentation transcript:

1 Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy

2 A renewable resource is one that can be reused or replaced.
Examples: sun and wind Solar grid outside of Saskatoon Centennial Wind Power Facility outside of Swift Current

3 A non-renewable resource is one that cannot be replaced once it is used up.
Examples: coal and oil Poplar River Coal Mine Oil Rig outside of Estevan

4 YouTube Video: How Power Gets to You!

5 Generating Electrical Energy
Generators: a device that transforms the energy of motion into an electric current Electric current is created by moving a conducting wire through a magnetic field! Massive generators are found at the Boundary Dam Power Station near Estevan, SK

6 Example: Hydroelectrical energy
The magnets inside a generator are rotated by a turbine, which is a machine that usually uses the flow of a fluid to turn a shaft. Example: Hydroelectrical energy The Coteau Creek Hydroelectric Station near Elbow, SK – the water turns the turbine, which is connected to a generator.

7 Using Heat to Generate Electrical Energy
Thermoelectric generating plants use fossil fuels to heat water to create high-pressure steam. Fossil Fuels: coal, oil and natural gas – all non-renewable resources.

8 YouTube Video: How do we Generate Power?
