1 Point vs. Nonpoint Pollution
Human Impact on the Earths Environment. ?Who is responsible?

2 Bioaugmentation – Designing bacteria to clean sewage; or to clean polluted and toxic water and soils. Biomagnification – build up of toxins in organisms by ingesting lower trophic levels organisms that ingest even lower trophic levels.

6 Point Source Pollution
comes from a specific source, like a pipe factories, industry, municipal treatment plants can be monitored and controlled by a permit system

7 What is nonpoint source pollution?
Nonpoint Source (NPS) Pollution is pollution associated with stormwater or runoff NPS pollution cannot be traced to a direct discharge point such as a wastewater treatment facility

8 Major Categories of Water Pollutants
Iodine, radon, uranium, cesium, thorium Source: Coal & Nuclear Power plants, mining, weapons production, natural Nitrates, Phosphates, Source: Sewage, manure, agricultural and landscaping runoff Organic debris & waste + aerobic bacteria Source: Sewage, feedlots, paper-mills, food processing Oil, Gasoline, Plastics, Pesticides, Solvents, detergents Sources: Industrial effluent, Household cleansers, runoff from farms and yards Acids, Metals, Salts Sources: Surface runoff, Industrial effluent, household cleansers Soil, Silt Source: Power plants, Industrial Bacteria, Viruses, Protozoa, Parasitic Worms Source: Human and animal waste Infectious Agents Oxygen-Demanding Waste Inorganic Chemicals Radioactive Materials Plant Nutrients Organic Chemical Eroded Sediment Heat/Thermal Pollution
