Question: What will happen if we place the gobstoppers in the water?

Hypothesis: If we place the gobstoppers in the water, then…….

Materials: 4 different colored gobstoppers Large petri dish
Cup of water Graduated cylinder or pipette Colored pencils

Procedures: Place the gobstoppers at the 12, 3, 6, & 9 o’clock position in the bowl. Slowly fill your dish with water just above the candy.

What is your conclusion?
Data/Observations: Using the big circles- Draw What the gobstoppers looked like in the bowl before you added the water After the water is added- What the gobstoppers look like 10 minutes later. What is your conclusion?

Conclusion: As the candies dissolve, the concentric layers of color disperse into the surrounding water, but adjoining colors do not readily mix to form new colors. This is because a thin layer of wax surrounds each layer, inhibiting the spread of colors. Further, the colored water forms clearly defined, wedge-shaped areas in the dish and changes color over time.)
