Types of Chemical Reactions
2
Standards Know that chemical reactions involve the rearrangement of atoms, and that they occur on many timescales Understand the types of chemical reactions
3
Chemical Reaction When one or more substances undergo changes to produce one or more different substances. This can occur on many timescales, from a fraction of a second to thousands of years.
4
Chemical Reaction Reactions are represented by a series of symbols called a chemical equation. Reactants = the starting materials, located on left side of equation Products = the end materials or what is produced, located on right side of equation means yields or forms Ex: eggs + butter + sugar + flour cookies Or, NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O There are 5 types of chemical reactions.
5
Composition/Combination/Synthesis
A + B AB Elements and compounds combine to form a new compound. Multiple reactants and single product. Examples: 2Mg + O2 2MgO CaO + H2O Ca(OH)2
6
Decomposition AB A + B A compound breaks down into elements or more simple compounds Single reactant and multiple products Examples 2H2O 2H2 + O2 H2CO3 H2O + CO2
7
Single Replacement A + BX B + AX
One element replaces a similar element in a compound Element and compound as both reactants and products Examples Zn + CuSO4 ZnSO4 + Cu Mg + 2HCl H2 + MgCl2
8
Double Replacement AX + BY AY + BX
Two compounds react to form two new compounds Two compounds as both reactant and product Examples NaCl + AgNO3 NaNO3 + AgCl CaCO3 + 2HCl CaCl2 + H2CO3
9
Combustion CxHy + O2 CO2 + H2O
Organic compound (contains C and H) reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water Organic compound and oxygen as reactants and water and carbon dioxide as products Examples CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O
