Focus Lesson: CELL CYCLE ORGANELLES
Work On the ‘Take it to the next level’ Column First, use your brain. If you get stuck, Use your notes on Page 23 and 24 Be seated and silent by the bell.
2
How and when do cells divide?
Essential Question How and when do cells divide? Daily Objectives: SWBAT: Describe the cell cycle by identifying the phases of mitosis. SWBAT: Interpret a diagram to identify the process of mitosis.

FCIM: Cell Cycle Organelles Review Pop Bead Reflection Notes: Mitosis
How will we get there? Last Class This Class Notebook Checks Quiz 9: Cell Cycle and Cancer SRE/Enrichments Mitosis Pop Bead Activity Extra Credit Opportunity Create an anti-carcinogen poster. Use color, include facts, turn it in before Thanksgiving break. FCIM: Cell Cycle Organelles Review Pop Bead Reflection Notes: Mitosis I.P. Mitosis
4
Reflection: Discuss as group and answer on page 30
When and why does the nuclear membrane dissolve? Which organelles are responsible for moving genetic information around the cell? Why is it important that chromosomes are formed by identical sister chromatids? What stage will the two new daughter cells immediately begin?

Notes: Mitosis Prepare for notes on Page 31 Have highlighters ready to highlight new vocabulary DIAGRAM WHEN APPROPRIATE!!!!
6
Mitosis What is it? Part of the cell cycle during which the nucleus divides. Does not happen in prokaryotic cells.
7
Mitosis There are four phases:
8
1. Prophase Spindle forms, centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell, Chromosomes become visible.
9
2. Metaphase Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
10
3. Anaphase Chromosomes separate (into chromatids) and move apart to opposite sides of the cell (poles)
11
4. Telophase Nuclear membrane forms between each of the groups of chromosomes. New nuclei form containing exact copies of the original cell’s DNA.
12
The cell pinches in the middle and divides cytoplasm into two daughter cells.
Cytokinesis
13
Review: At the bottom of page 30 (10 min) of the interactive journal they will summarize the movement of organelles during each stage focusing on: Nuclear membrane Cell Membrane Spindle Fibers Centrioles Cytoplasm Prophase Nuclear Mem: Cell Mem: Spindle Fibers: Centrioles: Cytoplasm: Metaphase Anaphase Telophase

Cell Division is VERY IMPORTANT in the lives of humans.
It is how our body renews itself. It is how we grow. It has important effects for how long we live: Total number of times a cell divides Cancer
15
Forms of DNA Page 32 Diagram chromatin, a chromatid, a chromosome IN COLOR. Explain the difference between the three forms of DNA and when they appear during the cell cycle below. Use Page 139 Fig. 5.5 and Page 141 as a reference

I.P. Mitosis (Page 33) Complete the short handout to review the content we’ve just learned. Extra Credit Opportunity: SRE questions 1-5 on a separate sheet of paper and turn in to the turn in bin
