1 Lesson Starter List the 5 sensory organs and what they detect
What are the 3 types of nerve cell and what job does each type do? What is the purpose of a reflex reaction?

2 Maintaining stable body conditions

3 To learn about HOMEOSTASIS
Learning Intention To learn about HOMEOSTASIS Success Criteria To be able to explain how the body controls our body temperature and sugar levels

4 The maintenance of a CONSTANT ENVIRONMENT in the body
Homeostasis The maintenance of a CONSTANT ENVIRONMENT in the body Body temperature Blood glucose levels Body water content

5 Video Note down the ways that the runner’s body worked in order to maintain HOMEOSTASIS

6 Note: to copy Homeostasis is the maintenance of a CONSTANT ENVIRONMENT in the body. Homeostasis ensures that our body always has the correct levels of water and glucose and is at the correct temperature

7 Maintaining body temperature
Normal temperature 37°C

8 Maintaining body temperature

9 Too hot? Effector=skin Sweating Flushed

10 Too cold? Effector= skin and skeletal muscles Decrease sweating
Decrease blood blow to surface Goosebumps Shivvering

11 Note: to copy The hypothalamus is the region of the brain which regulates body temperature If our body gets too hot, we start to sweat and blood rushes to the surface of our skin (flush) so that heat can be lost If we are too cold we get goosebumps (to insulate our bodies) and shiver to generate heat

12 Maintaining Glucose levels
Energy Constant level Too much or too little causes problems

13 Note: to copy Glucose is needed to provide ENERGY for living cells so it is important that glucose levels in blood is kept constant. Having too much glucose in the blood for long periods of time can cause serious health problems. The vessels that supply blood to vital organs can become damaged, which can increase the risk of heart or kidney disease, stroke and vision problems Having too little glucose in the blood is also dangerous. Effects can range from moodiness, seizures unconsciousness, brain damage or death.

14 Controlling blood sugar video

15 Homework Find out the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and write a paragraph to explain
