Endocrine System
2
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Consists of glands and tissues that secrete hormones.
Just like the nervous system, the endocrine system is intimately involved in homeostasis.
3
Hormones Chemical signals that affect the behaviour of other glands or tissues. Influence the metabolism of cells, the growth and development of body parts, and homeostasis.
4
Hormones and Homeostasis
The effect of hormones is controlled in two ways: Negative feedback cycles 2)Action of other hormones
5
Negative Feedback Eg. Blood glucose level rises, pancreas produces insulin, insulin causes liver to store glucose, glucose is removed from the blood for liver storage, blood glucose levels return to normal.
6
Other Hormones Homeostasis can also be restored by hormones which work in opposition to each other. Eg. insulin lowers blood glucose levels and glucagon raises it.
