After the WWI ended in 1918, it was decided that the millions of people who had died all over the world would be remembered on the anniversary of Armistice Day (the symbolic day the war ended) on 11th November. This became known as Remembrance Day, with the first one taking place in A two minute silence is held at 11:11. The Remembrance service is usually held on the second Sunday of November.

In 1921 the Royal British Legion was formed and the poppy was adopted as its symbol. The poppy was one of the few flowers to survive in an area damaged by fighting and was seen as a powerful symbol of hope.

The making of the poppy also gave jobs to those injured in war and the selling of the poppy raises money for people who have fought and been injured, and their families.

‘In Flanders Field’ by John McCrae 1915
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields

All around the country Remembrance Services will be taking place and people will be placing poppy wreaths at war memorials. Each class in our school have made a poppy wreath which will be placed on the school fence so everybody can see that we are remembering all the lives lost in past and present conflicts.
