2. What is DNA Technology?
DNA technology is the manipulation of genes to create genetically modified organisms
Biotechnology: use of organisms or their products to improve human health and food production

3. How long has this been happening?
For thousands of years, humans have been selectively breeding organisms for their desired traits
Hence the names purebred and hybrid

4. Genetic Engineering
Genetic engineering takes a set of genes from one organism and inserts them into another

5. Plasmids
Scientist also transfer DNA from a complex organism to a bacteria.
Bacteria have a ring of DNA called a plasmid.
Scientists open the plasmid to insert the new genes inside.

6. Plasmids continued
The plasmid (with both human and bacteria DNA) is reinserted into the bacteria.
The bacteria grows and reproduces.
The bacteria will make copies of the new genes along with their own

7. Cloning
Genetically identical individuals are made created from a single cell
The egg from the donor is fused with the nucleus of another cell.
When fused they begin to grow and divide.
When it begins to grow placed inside a host mother, and develops into an offspring.
The offspring will be genetically identical to the animal that donated the nucleus.

The mapping and sequencing of all the DNA and genes in a human

10. Gel Electrophoresis Comparing of DNA
When they are run through gel Electrophoresis, DNA can be sorted by size.
The pattern produced gives us a DNA “fingerprint” of an individual.
