Why use primary sources??
Expose you to multiple perspectives on issues in the past in present Help develop knowledge, skills, and analytical abilities Help relate in a personal way to events in the past
3
Remember… Primary sources are snippets of history. They are incomplete and often come without context. Must examine sources thoughtfully and to determine what else you need to know to make inferences from the material Consider the “Point of View” of the speaker, photographer, musician, etc.

What is “Photographic Analysis”?
“A picture is worth a thousand words.” What does this adage mean to you? Photographic analysis leads one through the process of observation, inference, and questioning of still images Provides an insight into different regions and cultures through readily available media Maximizes employment of primary sources and promotes critical thinking Actual method of analysis can vary depending upon desired end-state (what you are trying to do)
5
Photo Analysis Worksheet
We will utilize a worksheet developed by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) – official record keeper of the US government Three step process Observation (What do you see?)
