13 Nazi Ideology & the Holocaust
Basic Assumption of Nazi Ideology – All human history is a continual struggle for existence between races Survival of the race depends on RACE PURITY Seizure of territory to expand population (lebensraum) There is a hierarchy of races; some are more valuable than others Idea of the Jew in Nazi ideology: They are a race Were special enemies of the German people They have no living space of their own They sought to dominate other peoples and wanted world domination

14 General Information 6 million Jewish victims (approximately)
5+ million non-Jewish victims Victims = people who stood in the way of or did not fit into Nazi ideology Husbands & wives of Jews forced to get divorce or go to concentration camp “Interracial” marriages not allowed under Hitler

15 Use of propaganda against the Jews

18 This is what the German people were taught to believe based on Hitler’s idea of a perfect world: Peoples may not mix with others without bringing on decay and corruption, leading ultimately to extinction.

19 It was not only Jews that were targeted:
POLAND: Hitler starts WWII by bombing Poland in Sept 1939. Rounded up for slave labor & scientific experiments Blond Poles were “Germanized” Taken to be raised as Nazis by German 6 million killed (approx.) AFRO-EUROPEANS After WWI many African-Americans stayed in Europe. Children as a result of these marriages were sterilized without parent knowledge.

20 Jehovah Witness Killed for their beliefs and because they refused to sign documents of loyalty to Nazi Ideology; imprisoned a traitors. Gypsies Were to be completely annihilated; seen as racially inferior and worthless Homosexuals Predominantly males; included soldiers and SS Handicapped Hitler believed it was a waste of time and money to support them; deemed useless and put directly to death Christian & Catholic Leaders Hitler wanted to create a new religion and replace Jesus with the worship of Nazi ideology. Thousands allowed to die slowly of starvation. ANYONE WHO SPOKE OUT AGAINST THE NAZIS OR HITLER OR DEFENDED THE VICTIMS WERE ALSO KILLED.

21 Conclusion The Nazi conception of the world was fundamentally racist.
They had a crusade-like vision of saving western civilization from Jews. They had a strategic vision of a dominant German “Aryan” race ruling subject peoples. They believed “superior” races had not just the right but the obligation to subdue and even exterminate the “inferior” ones. To insure the racial superiority of Germany, they instituted the continual self-purge of their society.
