1. haiku Haiku is a form of poetry that originated in Japan.
Poets seek to create a clear picture with a few words. Entire poem consists of exactly 17 syllables arranged in 3 lines. The first and third line each contain 5 syllables. The second line has 7. (5-7-5) Haiku often centers on a symbol that instantly reminds readers of a season.

Write a haiku! Remember the requirements! *syllables are 5, 7, then 5 (3 lines total) *inspired by an element of nature or one of the four seasons *paints a clear picture using sensory language Illustrate your haiku!

2. limerick A limerick is a short, humorous poem made up of 5 lines.
Usually has the rhyme scheme aabba Usually has a sing-song rhythm.

3. Narrative Narrative poetry tells a story
Contains characters, a setting, and plot Example: “Casey at the Bat”

4. Free verse Poetry without regular patterns of rhyme and rhythm

5. couplet Exactly 2 successive lines that rhyme

6. sonnet Consists of exactly 14 lines Usually about love

Usually has a heroic theme or supernatural forces involved Much longer poems than other types

Praises or glorifies an event or individual Has a formal, dignified tone
