3 Bellringer—Friday What is the difference in a topic and a theme?

4 Topic vs. Theme Is there a difference?
Love Fear of Death People are often willing to sacrifice important things in the quest for love. The fear of death can be an agent for change.

5 QUIZ TIME Julius Caesar Act 3

6 Julius Caesar Acts 1-3 Creative Analysis
GROUP PROJECT

7 Objectives I can determine the theme of a text by analyzing topics within a text. I can use text evidence to support my claim that characters, symbols, and conflict create theme.

8 SOME THOUGHTS ON GROUP WORK…

9 Group Project—What NOT to Do

10 Group Project—What to Do

11 What topics do you see repeated throughout the text?
In “The Masque of the Red Death” we saw… Death Wealth Denial Selfishness Avoidance of the inevitable

12 What about in Julius Caesar? What are the topics that we see a lot?

13 Examples of topics in Julius Caesar:
Fate Death Manipulation Idealism Ambition Honor

14 THEME You’re on your way to figuring out theme!
Let’s take these topics a step further… Fate Death Manipulation Idealism Ambition Honor Choose ONE of the topics listed above and write a STATEMENT about what Shakespeare is communicating about that topic in the text. NOTE: Start with “Based on the text, Shakespeare believes that…”

15 Now what…? What you have left is a THEME in Julius Caesar!
Look at your statement and draw a line through “Based on the text, Shakespeare believes that…” What you have left is a THEME in Julius Caesar!

16 Project Guidelines (Consider this your checklist…)
Divide your board into FOUR sections. What goes in each section? In the upper left-hand corner, write your TOPIC and then a THEME that relates to your topic. An illustration that represents how the theme is communicated in the text A quote that shows how the author develops this theme (Think about what you would CITE if you were writing a CCC about theme in Julius Caesar.) An explanation of how your quote demonstrates your theme (Think about what you would write in the CLARIFY portion of a CCC about theme in Julius Caesar.)

17 TOPIC: Fate THEME: Individual human experiences are dictated more by choice and free will than they are by fate. ILLUSTRATION QUOTE Cassius: Men at some time are masters of their fates:  The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,  But in ourselves, that we are underlings.  ( ) EXPLANATION In this section of the text, Cassius’ words convey the idea that men control their own destinies—they choose a path that dictates their futures. Here Cassius uses this idea to convince Brutus that he can choose to either be a servant or to escape the end via rebellion.
