Our Health is a state of physical, mental, financial social well-being. Our health impacts, and is impacted by, our personal characteristics (like genetics and lifestyle choices), our workplaces, and the communities where we live. Health is a resource for everyday life that can have positive (or negative) effects on nearly every area of our lives. Health is NOT just our physical state. We are defining Health by 5 key dimensions (NOTE- for the purpose of this short presentation, move through these quickly and do not define each dimension OTHER THAN Emotional Health. I’ve left the definitions for reference only. Physical Health: an absence of illness, disease and injury. Also refers to health lifestyle behaviors. Emotional Health: an absence of mental health problems and addiction. Also refers to our drive, energy, optimism and resilience. Social Health: Having positive, productive relationships at home, work and in the community. Staying engaged and having a positive influence on those around us. Financial Health: Living within our means and feeling financially secure. Balanced spending behaviors. Setting and managing long and short term financial goals. And what we are calling, “Purpose”: Who we are, what we love and what motivates us everyday. Purpose is driven by passion, culture, spirituality. A sense of purpose allows us to feel satisfied and “whole.” For this presentation, we will focus mostly on Emotional Health Healthy relationships Socially engaged in/out of work Positive impact on our communities

3 Emotional Health Our emotional health is the foundation necessary for our total health. Emotional health problems are: Common Disruptive Expensive Under treated In many ways, emotional health is the foundation of our total health. If we are struggle with mental health or addiction problems we are less likely to attend to our physical health (diet, exercise, sleep, disease management); our relationships can suffer; we are less likely to “take care of business” at home and work. Emotional health problems are common, with nearly 15% of the global population suffering from a mental health condition each year. NOTE: another powerful taking point is that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., that ranks suicide higher than homicide and breast cancer. They are costly and disruptive to our People and our workplaces, through absenteeism, lost productivity and increased disability. The good news: treatment works. However due to many different barriers, most people never get the care they need.

4 Emotional Health Defined
Emotional Health involves the absence of the symptoms associated with mental health and substance abuse conditions. But Emotional Health is also a state of general well-being that enables each person to experience joy, meet the demands of everyday life, be resilient and pursue his/her own potential. Read the definitions. Additional comments: we tend to think about emotional health as “mental health”. We are talking about mental illness and substance abuse, but we are ALSO focusing on emotional “well being,” which is more about living a happy, fulfilled, productive life.

5 Emotional Health Emotional Health includes a lot of conditions that are hard to define, like our levels of engagement, joy, satisfaction, well-being and resilience. Often, a lack of Emotional Health involves the development of illnesses, such as: Depression / Bi Polar disorders Anxiety Drug / alcohol abuse Severe relationship strain Neurological problems Stress / trauma Psychosis This slide is self explanatory. It acknowledges that emotional health means a lot of different things, but it DOES include mental illness.

6 Key factors in sustaining Emotional Health
Maintaining physical health: healthy diet, good sleep, exercise and preventing illness/injury Minimizing use of drugs, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco/nicotine Stress management (hardiness) and resilience Staying engaged and productive Living within our financial means (Healthy) Social activity and connectedness This is a list of preventative factors. Generally, we maintain good emotional health when we engage in healthy behaviors, manage stress and stay socially active.

7 Signs you may be struggling with your Emotional Health
Feeling sad, “blue,” nervous, or detached Thoughts of suicide Increasing or misuse of drugs/alcohol (1 drink/day for women, 2/day for men) Fatigue-sleeping too much or too little. Detaching and withdrawing socially Conflicts with others Losing interest in things you used to enjoy Excessive absenteeism or tardiness Accidents and injuries Sudden or significant deterioration in performance Trouble making decisions Trouble “bouncing back” after a bad day or event This is not an exhaustive list, but it focuses on the signs we may be struggling. This list is not diagnostic but outlines some signs that someone may be struggling.
