2 Who is David Bates? David Bates was born in He is 64 years old. Yes, he’s STILL alive! He was born Dallas, Texas, where he lives and works today. His mother encouraged him to become an artist. When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father. His was influenced early on by his favorite pastime and passion, fishing, and the natural settings of the Texas as well as the vibrant people (and all forms of life) that inhabit these worlds. After college, he spent a year studying art in New York City. He then became an art professor in Dallas, TX at Eastfield College. David’s style of art is known as FOLK art. FOLK art is based on subjects taken from everyday life and surroundings. Most of his artwork is based on everyday life. He became a full-time artist in 1983. In his artwork, you can see that his parents are major influences in his subjects. He mother and father are both recognizable in some of his work. In the 1990, he branched out into sculpture. 4 Art Terms – things to think about when looking at this month’s art work, “Feeding the Dogs” by David Bates Composition – The plan, placement or arrangement of the ELEMENTS OF ART in a work, usually according to the principles of design. In other words, how the painting is “put together”. A few of the ELEMENTS OF ART are: Line — the visual path that enables the eye to move within the piece Shape — space between or around objects. Defined by edges within the piece, whether geometric or organic Color — hues with their various values and intensities Texture – Appears or feels rough or smooth. Pattern — You can create it by repeating a line, shape or color over and over again Focal Point (or center of interest) — the most important part or area in a work of art. All parts should center around, provide background for, or draw attention to the focal point
