11. Hair and Beauty Qualifications
Qualifications that have been approved by DfE for GCSE equivalencies
Choices for current Year 9 learners:
City & Guilds Level 2 Principal Learning In Hair & Beauty Studies
1 GCSE A* - C grade
The new qualifications have been added to the original qualifications are still in place. These new qualifications have been added as a direct response to centres to allow more progression and choice for learners.
The new larger diplomas are too big for the pre 16 market but allow a new starting point for full time learners. The new diploma qualifications have new titles which appeal to some centres and learners as they are certificated with the above titles and not introduction into the hair and beauty sector.
The new certificates allow for progression in specific areas. These are suitable for the pre 16 market
Level 4 has been developed to incorporate 4 pathways and a whole host of single unit awards which can be offered of progression and CPD

Learners must take the four mandatory units:
• 201 Enterprise in the hair and beauty sector and related industries (30 GLH)
• 204 Event planning and development (30 GLH)
• 203 Marketing and promotion in the hair and beauty sector (30GLH)
• 202 Personal presentation and communication in the hair and beauty sector (30 GLH)

14. City & Guilds Technical Award in Hair and Beauty Studies
Learners must take the three mandatory units:
• 210 Science of hair and beauty (30GLH)
• 211 Research historical influences in the hair and beauty sector (30 GLH)
• 212 Design a photographic image in the hair and beauty sector (30 GLH)
Learners must take one of the optional units:
• 214 Exploring skin care and make-up (30 GLH)
• 215 Exploring hand care and nail art (30 GLH)
• 213 Exploring hair care and styling (30 GLH)

16. Implications- Employers
Employers are seen by the Government as critical for the success of these reforms.
Employers will become the direct purchasers of apprenticeship and adult training not our centres
Evidence of direct employer involvement in the design and assessment of all vocational qualifications is expected and, in the case of the new apprenticeship qualifications, essential.
The reformed level 3 qualifications, endorsed by and developed with employers, will form the substantive part of the new study programmes
