POPULATION ECOLOGY pp
2
Organism Population Community
Ecosystem Biosphere Population: group of organisms of one kind living together within a community (ex. population of senorita fish) Populations have specific functions/jobs within the community
3
PROPERTIES Size: # of individuals a population contains Density
how crowded a population is # of individuals/unit area Dispersion: spatial distribution
5
Dispersion continued clumped: individuals clustered because of something favorable uniform: very evenly spaced due to territory (birds) or competition (desert plants) random spacing: no pattern due to predation (snakes) or random seed dispersal (flowers)
7
POPULATION MODELS Survivorship Curves
Type III: Most offspring die early in age so they must reproduce many offspring (EX insects, plants, or fish) Type II: Organisms die at equal rates (EX. Small mammals or birds) Type I: Organisms nurture offspring which live longer and die later in life (EX. Large mammals like humans or elephants)
8
POPULATION MODELS Also called growth curves
9
Exponential Model The larger the population, the faster it grows
10
LOGISTIC MODEL
11
Starts off exponential but levels off as resources become limited
The environment can sustain a maximum number of individuals
