Second-screen companion to the live broadcast of the heavy metal awards show May 2, 2013

Golden Gods SmartGlass concept
An update to the second screen experience for live events to include live updates in the form of behind-the-scenes/backstage interviews, arrivals, award winners, and other news from the live show. The plan was also to include social media activity related to the event. This is in addition to the offering of “ballcard” type information about the awards, nominees, presenters, and guests that was provided in previous SmartGlass experiences for live events. I conceptualized the experience for this event, and worked with IdentityMine on wireframes and design, and with the show producer on content for the actual event. Following are some details about the experience and some mockups. U

Golden Gods SmartGlass details
The persistent browsable content of the experience consisted of a listing of all the awards and nominees, presenters and guests. Additional information about each was sourced from Rovi and augmented by a music expert and editor that I hired for the project. Thumbnail images and an additional gallery of images was also a part of this experience. The live experience was highlighted by a series of backstage interviews conducted by Juliya Chernetsky, Mistress Julia of FUSE TV fame. A few intimate interviews were conducted during the rehearsals the day prior to the show in the VIP lounge of the NOKIA Theater in the LA Live complex. The day of the show interviews were conducted backstage against a step-and-repeat background as performers and award winners came offstage.

Social media integration
Social media is the second-screen experience of choice for many TV watchers. Integrating it into SmartGlass for live events is a must-have, and also a big challenge. While it is relatively simple to drop a social media feed onto a website (with moderation), but more challenging to allow for compelling interaction with the feed as a live experience. We planned to include a moderated feed, but eventually social media integration was cut from this experience. After the Golden Gods I continued to work with the SmartGlass platform team on social media for SmartGlass in an attempt to get a cross-platform integration solution implemented for this critical aspect of the second screen. An aspiration for live events is an Instagram feed from the venue to provide a richer live event experience by providing views from those at the venue.
