QUESTION ONE In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?
2
INTRODUCTION My opening title sequence has a subgenre of a psychological thriller however it does conform to many typical thriller elements such as the setting which is in a woods, an isolated place. Although the opening title sequence does challenge some conventions of the thriller genre for example typically thrillers would be set at night, where as mine is set in the day this could give the impression that there is safety contrasting to my setting. My opening takes inspiration from the thriller film ‘I Am Legend’ as it focuses on one mans journey of loneliness and isolation and shows a ordinary person put into an extraordinary situation.

FRAME ONE – The title of the film
Our film has been called ‘The Enduring’. The word enduring means “continuing or long-lasting” and this is exactly which we wanted to portray within our opening title sequence. Our character is going through a long-lasting struggle and always has to keep going and we picked our title carefully to portray that. We put our title at the end of the sequence to stand out as it hints massively to the audience to what its going to be about. We didn’t use typical thriller colours such as red as we didn’t cxss c want to foreshadow deaths, its more psychological, cds about one man alone. The title is in white with a dcdsz black background as black and white contrast each cdsa\ other and portray themes such as good v evil or the cdscsda known v the unknown as these are main themes dcsacds throughout our opening title sequence. The title of cvds\a the film was made in a electronic style font which cdsavfed\a looks distorted this was done as our opening title fdsavdsfaz sequence has lots of electronic elements such as the fdwa CCTV. n

FRAME 2 – Setting and location
The setting of our opening title sequence is shot in a woods. This is a typical convention of the thriller genre as it’s a isolated place with no chance of escaping. The secluded location gives our title sequence the element of a psychological thriller as our protagonist is totally alone with no one else there and over a long time the result of this is negative towards his psychological state. The location hints to what the film is going to be about as the opening title sequence is set in one location only it suggests that, that location is going to be the only one for the majority of the film. It was shot during the day this is unconventional with many thrillers which are typically set at night. Daylight has connotations of safety and this contrasts with our setting and the surveillance aspect making it unsettling and uneasy to watch as it shows that not even in the daylight is he safe, this contrast also creates a lot of questions for the audience.

FRAME 3 – Costumes and props
In In frame 3 it shows the main protagonists costume. The clothes that the main protagonist is wearing are normal every day clothes. We chose this clothing because we wanted to portray and make it obvious that our main protagonist as a normal ordinary person which has been put into a extraordinary situation this is typical for the thriller genre. Although some of this costume was chosen to give the feel of the ‘survival’ character such as his rain coat, he is wearing as he has been living in a dark wet woods. In the opening title sequence we didn’t have many props we did this for the same reason as we wanted to portray the character as a ordinary man that was put into the situation unwillingly and unprepared.

FRAME 4 – Camerawork and editing
Throughout our opening title sequence we included a range of different shots that are conventional to the thriller genre. This included an establishing shot, close ups, long shots, medium shots, POV shots. We included a range of different shots to show different things such as a long shot to show how the character was fully alone and a close up to show the characters emotions. We also used a lot of high angle shots to give the idea that there was there was surveillance watching him the camera was put up in high up places to act as it was a hidden CCTV camera. When we was editing the surveillance shots we put a black and white filter over and made the shot more distorted to set them apart from the other shots and make it obvious it was CCTV, in the corner of the shot was included CCTV writing such as the time, date and subject number giving the impression he is being watched. We included two POV shots throughout our opening title sequence the first was the point of view of our main protagonist running and looking around panicked, this creates a narrative enigma for the audience. Our second point of view shot shows the camera peaking from behind a tree looking at the main protagonist, to show someone is watching him this creates a sense of mystery for the audience because although throughout the opening title sequence we only see the main protagonist this shot shows to the audience that he is not alone. This is conventional to many thrillers as usually the antagonists identity is not revelled until the end of the film leaving the audience guessing.

FRAME 5 – Title font and style.
We used two different style’s of fonts throughout our opening title sequence one for the title of the film and a different one for the credits. This was done for a number of reasons firstly to differentiate the title to the credits and make the title stand out. We used an electronic style front for the title of the film to hint at the CCTV element of the film. The second style of font which was used for the credits we chose to use was basic with a blurred line going through the letters making it distorted. This was to create and give the feel of the psychological element of the film, the normal letters distorted creates the idea that something isn’t quite right.

FRAME 6 – Story and how the OTS sets it up
One of the main aspects to our storyline is the CCTV and the opening title sequence hints that to the audience well. This is a shot of a CCTV camera, there are a number of different shots showing CCTV cameras at various different points throughout the opening title sequence this is done to keep showing the audience the importance of the CCTV cameras and hints its going to play a big part to the storyline.

FRAME 7 – Genre and how the OTS suggests it
The genre of our opening title sequence is a psychological thriller and it shows this in a number of ways. In this frame is shows a main protagonist walking through the woods alone through a CCTV shot in the corner the audience can see the CCTV text says ‘woods 35’ and ‘subject 79’ this suggests the thriller genre of how he

FRAME 8 – How characters are introduced.
The main protagonist is introduced in the very beginning of the opening title sequence. He is introduced with a medium close up of him sitting in the woods alone looking around distressed and breathing very heavily. This shot straight away tells the audience that the film is going to be a serious film. The character is introduced in a serious way setting the characters role up for the rest of the film.

FRAME 9 – SPECIAL EFFECTS
When making our opening title sequence we used a number of different special effects to create different moods and atmosphere. One thing we did was make the credits flicker when they came on and off the screen this was to give a sinister feel and to create the idea that something isn’t right.
