Is This Art? Unit 1 Essential Question: What is Art? Vocabulary: Art, Fine Art, Applied Art, Functions, 2D, personal, cultural, practical, critique, analysis, judgement, description, interpretation

2 Art The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination

3 Fine Art visual art considered to have been created primarily for aesthetic purposes and judged for its beauty and meaningfulness Examples include painting, sculpture, drawing, watercolor, graphics, and architecture.

Examples are industrial design, bookmaking, illustration, printmaking, and commercial art Applied Art

7 1. personal Art for aesthetics, beauty, or personal reasons such as to communicate something to the viewer, self expression, entertainment, or therapy.

8 It is not usually one person’s point of view or experience.
2. cultural or social Art that addresses aspects of life, cultural beliefs, political beliefs, social condition or status, etc. It is not usually one person’s point of view or experience.

9 3. practical or physical art
art that serves a utilitarian (useful) purpose

10 2D Art paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs, etc.
(Typically anything on a flat surface)

11 To comment on the subject of art; evaluating a literary or artistic work
Can be confused with “criticism” – the act of passing judgement on the quality of something ? critique

12 describe To depict in words (written or spoken) what you see
Make sure to include artist and title of the work

13 interpret To explain or provide a meaning for an artwork
Respond to thoughts, feelings, and actions to what we see and experience then to make sense of our responses by using words Make meaningful connections to an artwork interpret

the most significant art principles that were used in the artwork For example: how did the artist organize the elements, textures, shapes/forms, light/dark or bright/dull colors, types of lines, and sensory qualities Shading and value texture space perspective
