4 Reconstruction was a period/plan after the Civil War when the U. S
Reconstruction was a period/plan after the Civil War when the U.S. government attempted to restore the Union (U.S.).

6 John Wilkes Booth assassinates Lincoln

7 Similar to Lincoln, Johnson wanted to allow the Southern states to re-enter the Union as quickly as possible.

8 However, a group called the Radical Republicans controlled Congress and they wanted to punish the South . . .

9 . . . by using Reconstruction to force political and social reform in the Southern states.

10 Serious differences between Congress and Johnson over how to handle Reconstruction resulted in the impeachment of Johnson in 1868.

11 Johnson was acquitted, but lost his political power, and the Radical Republicans in Congress dictated the terms of Reconstruction thereafter.
