UBT goals are getting SMARTer
Effective team goals are SMART—specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. A review of all goals set by Northern and Southern California unit-based teams between 2010 and 2011 shows that nearly two-thirds of teams had SMART goals for their improvement projects in January 2011—the opposite of the year-earlier results. Now having said all that, things are getting better,. I did an analysis of projects in NCAL and SCAL initiated in January 2010 and January 2011 which involved reading a very large number of SMART goals until my eyes glazed over. I kept the bar pretty low --SMART Goals were identified as sufficiently “smart” if they included 1) a specific measure used to judge success; 2) an explicit or implicit (e.g. “achieve regional target) target level of performance; 3) an explicit or implicit target date.
