PAR: scope. Evolution discussion
March 2008 doc.: IEEE /0219r4 May 2008 PAR: scope. Evolution discussion Purpose of the contribution: Converge on an appropriate wording for VHTL6 PAR scope Address the two outstanding issues: Rate metric definition: what should we include (BSA/BSS/infrastructure BSS/direct links)? Come up with a reasonable PAR target throughput that avoid putting too many constraints on entry point products References: Document 08/0219r2 for VHTL6 PAR&5C’s proposal Documents 08/0464r2, 08/0465r2 and 08/0499r1 detailing relevant metrics to consider for rate target specification Documents 08/0307r1 and 08/0535r0 on achievable PHY and MAC throughput analysis Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom) Marc de Courville (Motorola)

New PAR: scope proposal
March 2008 doc.: IEEE /0219r4 May 2008 New PAR: scope proposal The scope of this project is to define an amendment that shall define standardized modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) so that modes of operation can be enabled that are capable of supporting: A maximum infrastructure BSS throughput of at least 1Gbps as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Multiple communications at the same time Below 6GHz carrier frequency operation excluding 2.4GHz operation and ensuring backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE802.11a/n devices in the 5GHz unlicensed band. Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom) Marc de Courville (Motorola)

Intent behind this new scope proposal
May 2008 Intent behind this new scope proposal The current new version intends to address the feedback received on the previous documents. Changelog is: Constrain to a single set of devices to eliminate multichannel complications Remove IBSS to constrain/bound to infrastructure relevant data flows Remove DiL considerations to focus on infrastructure BSS Do not distinguish between DL/DiL/UL Result = concentrate on the parts that will allow VHTL6 to make a difference and be unique Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom)

Straw poll on how to address achievable rate issue
May 2008 Straw poll on how to address achievable rate issue Straw poll: In order to come up with a reasonable PAR target throughput that avoids putting too many constraints on entry point products which is your favorite option? Option 1: lower the peak rate in the PAR scope wording straw poll result: 500Mbps: 14, 750Mbps: 3, 1Gbps: 45 Indicates that 1Gbps should be the target! Option 2: make the throughput metric optional in the scope wording e.g.: An optional mode providing a maximum infrastructure BSS throughput of at least 1Gbps as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Option 3: add an explanatory note to detail in which specific configuration the throughput constraint must be met e.g.: The infrastructure BSS throughput is defined as the sum of the MAC SAP throughputs across all active transmissions within the BSS The 1Gbps maximum BSS throughput is to be achieved when considering a BSS with at least 1 AP and 3 simultaneously actively-communicating STAs Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom)

May 2008 Explanatory notes The infrastructure BSS throughput is defined as the sum of the MAC SAP throughputs across all active transmissions within the BSS. The 1Gbps maximum BSS throughput is to be achieved when considering a BSS with at least 3 simultaneously actively-communicating STAs. Examples of candidate technologies that will contribute to achieve the targeted throughput encompasses space/time/frequency multiplexing: SDMA, OFDMA, Multi-User MIMO ( transmissions and network coding. March 2008 doc.: IEEE /0219r4 May 2008 PAR: purpose The purpose of the project is to improve the wireless local area network (LAN) user experience by providing significantly higher BSS throughput for existing WLAN application areas and to enable new market segments for operation below 6 GHz including distribution of multiple multimedia/data streams. Courville (Motorola), Engwer (Nortel), Kraemer (Marvell), De Vegt (Qualcomm), Erceg (Broadcom) Marc de Courville (Motorola)
