Writers make surprise endings believable by including details that support the surprise ending without giving it away

3. The surprise
O. Henry creates a surprise ending by using events from the story to create an ending for the readers that they will expect, and then uses the main characters in his story to create a surprise ending
In “A Retrieved Reformation.” O. Henry uses the characters Jimmy Valentine and Ben Price to create a surprise ending
When Jimmy disguised as Ralph Spencer cracks the bank vault to save the little girl Agatha.
Jimmy thinks that Ben Price will turn him in, but Ben Price makes the decision to let Jimmy go

4. Examples of Surprise Ending
Another example of Surprise Ending is the story “The Gift Of The Magi.”
In this story Della sells her hair so she can buy a gift for her husband Jim
In the end she buys a gift that is an accessory to his watch, but Jim sold his watch to but a set for combs for Della’s long hair, but now that she sold to buy a present for his watch
In the end they got each other gifts out of love, and gave up their most important and prized possessions for each other
O. Henry was also the author of this story
