The Integumentary and excretory systems
Created by Mozart, Treyvon and kabir

Standard: SC.6.L.14.5 Identify and investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body (circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal) and describe ways these systems interact with each other to maintain homeostasis. (Cognitive Complexity: High) Prior Knowledge-[SC.5.L.14.1 and SC.5.L.14.2.]

Essential Question: How do the integumentary and excretory systems work together to allow the body to maintain homeostasis.

Vocabulary: Excretory System- Eliminates cellular wastes from the body through the lungs, skin, kidneys, and digestive system. Skin Gland- are glands found in the body that help keep the body cool and free of waste. Sweat Gland- are glands that gets rid of excess salt and cools the body down through sweating. Integumentary system- the main barrier that protects the body from the outside world. Urinary system- collects cellular waste and eliminates it from the body in form of liquid waste. Digestive system- breaks down food and absorbs nutrients then exerts waste in the form of feces. Kidneys- a pair of organs that remove waste from the blood. Urine- liquid waste produced by the urinary system. Feces- solid waste that is produced by the digestive system

3 Ways to Remove Waste

Sweating Sweating help cool down your body and release excess salt
When you sweat the sweat glands in your skin push out moisture that cools down your body and releases salt Sweating helps your body maintain homeostasis by the moisture brings your body temperature back to normal

Exhaling Your lungs are apart of your respiratory and excretory systems When you exhale your lungs push out excess oxygen, water and toxic carbon dioxide Exhaling helps keep toxic carbon dioxide out of your body

Producing waste Both the digestive and urinary systems help eliminate waste, they do this by producing feces and urine Kidneys filter many types of cellular waste out of the blood this waste is eliminated in the form of urine Once all the water and nutrients is absorbed by organs in the digestive system fecal matter is stored in the rectum the waste is eliminated in the form of feces

The Process of Eliminating Waste

Urinary Fluid waste from the blood enters the kidney, then goes through microscopic nephrons inside the kidney that filter the fluid, there about 1 million nephrons inside a kidney. The fluid then goes in to the glomerulus, the glomerulus helps in the filtering of the fluid waste The fluid the goes through the ureters, the ureters are tubes that urine flows through to get to the bladder The bladder then stores the urine and then the urine is exerted through the urethra

Digestive Once the intestines and colon are done absorbing the nutrients and water, fecal matter is stored in the rectum and then released through the rectum

Assessment: 1. What are 3 ways to remove waste? 2.What sensory organ cools down the body and releases excess salt by sweating? 3. How would a damaged kidney affect your body? 4. How do kidneys work with other body systems to maintain homeostasis? 5. What role does the skin play in homeostasis?

And that will conclude this epic power point made by Mozart, Treyvon and Kabir!
