2. The Oral Surgery Commissioning guide
Level 1 – Procedures/conditions to be performed or managed by a clinician commensurate with a level of competence as defined by the Curriculum for Dental Foundation Training or equivalent. This is the minimum that a commissioner would expect to be delivered in a primary care NHS Mandatory contract. Many dentists with experience have competencies above this.

3. Foundation Training Curriculum
CLINICAL DOMAIN 7. HARD AND SOFT TISSUE SURGERY
The foundation dentist can demonstrate to an appropriate standard the:
1. Extraction of primary and permanent erupted teeth, including erupted uncomplicated third molars, and the appropriate diagnosis and management of any common complications, e.g. haemorrhage.
2. Effective management, including extraction where appropriate, of buried roots (whether fractured during extraction or retained root fragments), unerupted, impacted, ectopic and supernumary teeth.
3. Effective management of patients with relevant medical conditions including bleeding disorders, and medications e.g. all oral anti-coagulants and bisphosphonates.
4. Ability to carry out an accurate pre- and post-operative assessment of the patient, and give appropriate advice on self-management.
5. Referral of patients requiring complex treatment, sedation or general anaesthesia, or surgical treatment of hard and soft tissue lesions.
6. Provides preventive and supportive care for patients with implants, and can describe the basic principles and techniques involved in the surgical placement of dental implants

4. Training Opportunities
For the first time the new RMS system will be able to collect information about dentists and their referral pattern
Dentists identified as outliers due to high or low levels of referrals will be contacted and asked to audit their referrals
Training will be offered to those not feeling confident with Oral Surgery

5. Training Opportunities
The new tier 2 providers have a requirement to provide training built in to their contracts
GDP’s who do not feel confident with extractions/ oral surgery can ask to access this training. – You do not have to wait to be asked
