Asset Development Engineer
I started my career in civil engineering unintentionally when I accepted a temporary role within the customer services team to cover maternity leave. From there I gained an interest in the technical side of the business and found myself working within the area team who were responsible for managing and maintaining the network.
Since A-one+ won the Area 12 contract, I have worked within the roads value management team/roads asset development team I started as technical assistant. Through the support and guidance of my colleagues I have been given the opportunity to develop my technical knowledge and understanding through practical experience and educational qualifications. My development has led to successfully securing promotions to technician and now to engineer level.
As part of my current role my main duty is to identify and develop roads renewal schemes to progress through to the value management workshops in order to secure funding for future years. Typically, I am presented with a draft programme of delivery, which I develop in line with the timescales set by the client. As part of my responsibilities I compile the value management documentation for each of the schemes, including undertaking detailed condition surveys, requesting technical surveys and collating other evidence to support the submission of the schemes. This information is used to communicate the condition of the assets to the client, through technical drawings.
The thing which I enjoy most about my job is the variability which my role offers, being able to spend my time both in the office developing reports and out on the network undertaking site visits and surveys. Working for A-one+, provides many opportunities to gain further knowledge and experience through visits to construction sites to see first-hand some of the many construction processes. For the past 2 years I have also enjoyed being a STEM ambassador, as part of this role I visit local schools and colleges to support different activities and inspire the next generation.
