Wait, what is propaganda?

Propaganda is . . . the use of words or symbols to persuade you to believe an idea, buy a product, or take some other action. People often think of propaganda as something negative, as in a con or a lie. But propaganda doesn’t really have anything to do with negative or positive. Persuasion!!

Who uses propaganda? Advertisers often use propaganda.
People who are running for mayor or president use propaganda. Propaganda can be used for good causes as well as bad causes. Propaganda can be used to persuade people to exercise more often, which is healthy. It can also be used to get them to eat products that contain too much fat, salt, or sugar.

Testimonial An important person or famous figure endorses a product.
You are more likely to believe it if someone famous endorses it.

Bandwagon Used to convince the audience to do or believe something because everyone else is doing it.

Plain Folks Used to suggest something is practical and a good value for ordinary people.

Card-Stacking This method is used when an advertiser mentions all of the good points of the product or service, but none of the bad points. This company would omit anything negative about it’s product, and maybe even stretch the truth.

Repetition The product name or keyword or phrase is repeated several times.

Glittering Generalities
Uses words so strongly positive in emotional content that just hearing them makes you feel good. The words express a positive meaning without actually giving a guarantee.

Name Calling Negative words are used to create an unfavorable opinion of the competition in the viewer's mind.

Transfer Good feelings, looks, or ideas transferred to the person for whom the product is intended. If they show you something that looks good or evokes a happy feeling, then when they bring in their product, their hope is that you will like their product as well.

Snob Appeal This is the method that promotes the idea that if you want to be a superior person you will buy their product. You are better than everyone else or in the elite group because you shop at a particular store.

Glad Names In this method, the advertiser states positive things about the listener or reader. You should use their product because you deserve something special.

Fear In this method, the advertiser plays on the fears of the viewers.
They warn the audience that disaster will result if they do not follow a particular course of action.

Humor In this method, the advertiser does something weird, interesting, and/or funny. They want you to laugh, feel good, think they’re witty, and want to buy the product.
