I am going to talk about Cornell Notes for the next few minutes. Take notes in this section any way that works for you! Leave the rest of the page empty for now! 2 1/2”

Don’t forget the heading: Name, Class, Period, Date, Topic Notes go here, in the large right hand column. A 3 to 4 sentence summary down there on the bottom of the last page of notes

6 Why Use Cornell notes? By day 2, if you do not think about or review your notes, you will lose percent of what you learned. By day 30, if you do not think about or review your notes, you remember only 2-3 percent of what you learned on day one. Students who take no notes or some notes retain less than 59 percent of what was learned. Students who take and use Cornell Notes as a study tool retain percent(!) of what was learned. 7 Why Use Cornell notes? Can be detailed as necessary
Can be used to provide an outline of chapter or lecture Can be detailed as necessary Sequential- take notes as they are given by the teacher Questions are added on left column End with a summary of the learning Can be used as a study tool

8 When should you take notes?
With an elbow partner, discuss when you should take notes in class. Make a list. Be prepared to share with the class!

The speaker says to take notes The speaker says something you don’t already know The speaker presents using PowerPoint The speaker writes on the board The teacher says, “This will be on the test.”

10 Practice Time Highlight important concepts and underline things you might need clarified. With your partner(s), create questions in the left hand column.

11 Your questions should include:
Practice Time Your questions should include: Info you don’t understand or want to discuss with your teacher. Info you think would go good on an essay test. Gaps in your notes.

12 Summary On your own, in the space provided at the bottom of the page, complete a 3 or 4 sentence summary of what you wrote in your notes. (aka, the summary…)

13 Closure Tell an elbow partner one thing you like about Cornell Notes and how you will use them in class.
