1 Nervous System Overview

2 Function of the Nervous System
Gathers, processes, and responds to information Receives information through the five senses The basic functioning units are called neurons

3 Divided into Two Parts:
Central (CNS) Peripheral (PNS)

4 Central Nervous System
Brain Spinal cord

5

6 Brain Cerebrum Cerebellum Brain stem

7 Cerebrum Cerebral Cortex
Coordinates Thinking and learning Creativity Five senses Memory and emotion Problem-solving Decisions Language

8

9 Hippocampus Stores and processes memories Helps find memories
Helps find memories Affects emotions

10 Cerebellum Coordinates Most muscles Movement Learned skills

11 Cerebellum Receives messages from most of the muscles in your body
Communicates with the other parts of the brain Sends messages about movement and balance back to your body

12 Brain Stem Coordinates Heartbeat Breathing Digestion Swallowing
Blinking

13 Spinal Cord Bundle of nerves that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Long tube of nerve tissue running from the brain down the length of the back inside of the spine

14

15

16 The Peripheral Nervous System
Has sensory neurons and motor neurons that transmit information between the CNS and the rest of the body.

17 Two parts of the PNS Somatic NS Autonomic NS Sensory nerves
Motor nerves Messages between brain and body CONTROLS VOLUNTARY MUSCLES Autonomic NS Controls organs and some muscles CONTROLS INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES

18 Neurons Nerve Cells Parts Carry messages Soma Dendrites Axon
Called impulses

19 Synapse Small space across which an impulse moves from an axon to the dendrites or cell body of another neuron

20

21 Stimulus-Response Stimulus (stimuli)
Anything that the body can react or respond to May be internal or external Response – the reaction to stimuli

22

23 Impulses are picked up by DENDRITES and travel down the AXON.
Impulses are picked up by DENDRITES and travel down the AXON.

24 Stimuli comes into the brain through the five senses
Stimuli comes into the brain through the five senses. The nerves that bring stimuli into the body are SENSORY neurons. The impulse travels through INTERNEURONS. When the impulse reaches the MOTOR neuron, the response occurs. home.earthlink.net/~dayvdanls/IHP2.html
