1 Vocabulary SS6G9 – Explain the impact of location, climate, natural resources, and population distribution on Europe. a. Compare how the location, climate, and natural resources of Germany, the United Kingdom, and Russia impact trade and affect where people live.

2 Arable – capable of producing crops; suitable for farming; land used for growing crops.

3 Climate – the average weather of a place over a long period of time.

4 Permafrost – Permanently frozen soil; a layer of soil, rock, or sediment that has been frozen for more than two consecutive years.

5 Urban – an industrialized area of a city or town; characteristic of a city or a densely populated area

6 Location – describes where a place is; can be relative (in relation to something else) or absolute (precise: using address or GPS coordinates).

7 Natural Resources – useful materials found in the environment; a naturally occurring source of wealth, consisting of land, forest, mineral deposits, water etc.

8 Population Distribution – the pattern of where people live, the arrangement or spread of people living in a given area;

9 Population Density – the number of people living per unit of land; a measurement of population per unit area or unit volume.

10 Trade – the act or process of exchanging, buying or selling goods and services.

11 Pollution – the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment.

12 Cause – a person or event that makes something happen; a person or thing that gives rise to an action, phenomenon, or condition.

13 Effect – a change that is the result or consequence of an action or other cause; the change that is the result of an action or cause.

14 Solution – the means of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation.

15 Emissions – the production and discharge of something, especially gas or radiation.

16 Contamination – the act or state of making something impure by polluting or poisoning; making something harmful or unusable.

17 Coastline – the outline of a coast or shoreline; the land and water lying adjacent to a shoreline.

18 Port – a city, town, or other place where ships load or unload; a place along a coast in which ships may take refuge from storms; a harbor.

19 Concentrated – clustered or gathered closely together.
