2. What Are Tsunamis?
Tsunamis are ocean waves produced by earthquakes or underwater landslides

3. The word Tsunami!
The word is Japanese and means "harbor wave," because of the devastating effects these waves have had on low-lying Japanese coastal communities

5. Waves Speed and Height!
These series of waves can travel at speeds averaging 450 (and up to 600) miles per hour in the open ocean.
Unusual wave heights have been known to be over 100 feet high. However, waves that are 10 to 20 feet high can be very destructive and cause many deaths or injuries.

Rescue workers continue to find bodies in Thailand and elsewhere following the catastrophic sea surges!

The death toll from the Indian Ocean tsunamis now stands at 156,000!
The toll jumped after Indonesia raised its tally by 14,000 to more than 94,000 early Monday Jan 03,2005

25. Fight Against Time
Survivors from tsunami will face a host of new threats in the coming days and weeks: viruses and bacteria in the water, diseases seeping from human remains, and the vulnerability to bugs and other predators that comes from having no shelter.

Tsunamis are unlikely to impact the region's IT industry, which is centered away from affected areas.

For your knowledge
If you are at the beach or near the ocean and you feel the earth shake, move immediately to higher ground
Stay away from rivers and streams that lead to the ocean
Staying away fro all low-lying coastal areas is the safest advice when there is a tsunami warning.
Never go down to the beach to watch for a tsunami! WHEN YOU CAN SEE THE WAVE YOU ARE TOO CLOSE TO ESCAPE!
