New York and New Jersey England captured the Dutch colony of New Netherland in 1644. The King of England gave this colony to his brother, James, the Duke of York. James, the Duke of York, became the proprietor of present day New York and New Jersey. A proprietor was a person who owned and controlled all the land in a colony. As a proprietor you could do whatever you wanted with the land. James kept part of the land and gave the rest to his friends, John Berkley and George Carteret. They divided their land into 2 colonies and named them East and West Jersey. In 1702, the colonies joined and formed New Jersey.

New York and New Jersey Facts about proprietors: Their goal was to make money. Did this by selling or renting pieces of their land to colonists to farm. They lived in England. It was hard to control the land from that far away. They chose governors to rule their land. Governors chose a council to help make important decisions.

New York and New Jersey Proprietors also allowed colonists to elect representatives to an assembly. A representative is someone who is chosen to speak and act for others. The assembly helped the governor and council make laws, but it did not have much power. The assembly was an important step toward self government. Pennsylvania & Delaware
William Penn was a member of a religious group called the Society of Friends, or the Quakers Penn founded Pennsylvania as a place where people could worship freely and live in peace. Penn was given this land because King Charles II owed money to Penn’s family. The Duke of York gave him more land which became the Delaware colony. Remember, in England, everyone was supposed to belong to the Church of England. Cultural Regions

William Penn: Created laws that allowed colonists to voice their opinions and worship freely. Let colonists elect representatives to an assembly & gave them more power. Treated Indians with respect. Created a treaty with Indians when he bought land from them. A treaty is an official agreement between nations or groups. Penn’s fairness helped Pennsylvania and Indians live together peacefully for many years. Penn also planned the colony’s first large city, Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Ben Franklin was Philadelphia’s most famous citizen.
Franklin published a newspaper and Poor Richard’s Almanac. He helped start Philadelphia’s first public library, fire company, and hospital. He discovered lightning was a form of electricity. He invented a wood stove, clock and many more useful items. Penn chose a site where the Delaware and Skoo kill rivers met. It was a good site for shipping and receiving. He designed wide straight roads for easy travel. During the 1700’s, Philadelphia became a center of trade. It was the largest city in all the colonies.
