Linnaeus Started it All
Before Linneaus, there was no standard for naming organisms – CHAOS! Linneaus (1700s) organized animals based on physical similarities We know that physical similarities don’t always mean they are related …What type of structure is this?? Now we classify animals based on their genetic similarities

Important Vocabulary:
Taxonomy - science of naming and classifying organisms Taxon – group of organisms (ex: order, class) that are similar Binomial nomenclature – two word system for naming organisms. Genus species if you are typing it Genus species if you are writing by hand Species – Group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
