Town vs Manor Fundamental difference = Wealth and Status
1. Merchants – wealth based on possession of money: Lords wealth based on land 2. Merchants – status achieved by labor and bargaining: Lords on inheritance, bloodline, birth right

Feudal barons treated burghers with contempt
Burghers had money = persuasive Barons/Lords gave written charters for money Town = personal freedom Thus: X + Y + Z = town growth (what are x, y and z)
