ANNUAL RADIATION SAFETY TRAINING 2018-2019
3
RSO Telisa Goins, is serving as the Interim Radiation Safety Officer and handles our radiation program. If you have any questions regarding UA’s program, please contact Telisa at or call
4
Annual radiation safety training is required of all sublicensees and personnel and/or students who work in an area where radiation is produced or sources are utilized.
5
Waste One of the changes for this year is the way that radioactive wastes are managed in the laboratory.
6
SAA When radioactive wastes are generated it must be placed in temporary storage within the lab where it was generated. This area must be designated as a Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) for radioactive wastes.
7
There are a few specific rules that apply to an SAA, but for the most part radioactive waste is managed as it has been for the last few years.
8
Containers All radioactive waste containers must be kept closed and only opened when material is being added.
9
Waste Labels Containers must be labeled with the RSO number, isotope and amount of radioactive material present in the container.
10
Pick-Up Request You can schedule a Radiation waste pickup by going to the EHS web site. Under the Research heading, select radiation safety, then Request Pickup.
11
Management Radioactive waste management is very complex and the regulations are extensive. If you have any questions or need assistance contact EHS at
12
Emergency Contacts In the event of a spill or emergency, alert others and contact EHS at If needed contact UAPD at EHS has a fully equipped hazmat response team, in the event that they are needed.
13
Meter Calibration Another change this year, is the Radiation Detection Instrument Calibrations. The state of Alabama requires all instruments be calibrated annually. EHS can assist with the calibrations.
14
Security Please make sure all radiation areas are locked when personnel are not present.
15
Labels and signage Please ensure that ALL designated radiation areas are labeled and have the appropriate signage posted.
16
PPE Please make sure the appropriate PPE is utilized.
Eye protection should be worn in all radiations areas. Always have appropriate shielding available as needed.
17
