1 Lesson 1: The Godhead

2 The Godhead To Understand the Godhead, We Must Understand “God.”
When one thinks of “God,” it is usually “God, the Father” who is in mind. The most frequent Hebrew word for “God” is Elohim. Elohim is a Hebrew masculine noun that is a plural form. The most frequent Hebrew name for God is Jehovah. Jehovah is, therefore, the Great “I AM.” The Jews so revered the name Jehovah that they determined to never pronounce it.

3 The Godhead …We Must Understand the Nature/Essence of God.
…We are studying “what God is.” God is Spirit (John 4:24; Luke 24:39; Rom. 1:20; John 1:18). God is Self-Existent (John 5:26). God is a Person/Personality (Psa. 23; John 3:16). God is Limitless/Infinite (1 Kgs. 8:27; Isa. 66:1; Rev. 1:4, 8). God is Eternal (Psa. 90:1-2; 102:27; et al.). God is Omnipresent (Psa. 139:7-12; Jer. 23:23-24; et al.). God is Omnipotent (Gen. 17:1; 18:14; Rev. 19:6; et al.). God is Omniscient (Psa. 139:1-6; 147:5; Rom. 11:33-36; et al.). God is Immutable (Jas. 1:17; Mal. 3:6; Heb. 1:12; et al.). Each member of the Godhead equally retains and shares the one essence of God!

4 The Godhead …We Must Understand the Attributes/Qualities of God.
…We are studying “what God does in relation to man.” God is Holy (Isa. 6:1-5; Ex. 15:11; Rev. 15:4; et al.). God is Love (1 John 4:7-21; John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; et al.). God is Good (Psa. 52:1; 25:8; 100:5; 107:1-43; et al.). God is Truth (Psa. 146:5-6; Num. 23:19; Heb. 6:17-18; et al.). God is Faithful (Lam. 3:22-23; Deut. 7:9; Psa. 36:5; 89:8; et al.). God is Patient (Rom. 15:5; Psa. 114:8; Nah. 1:3; et al.). God is Just (Gen. 18:25; 1 John 3:7; Isa. 45:21; Psa. 89:14; et al.). God is Gracious and Merciful (Ex. 34:6; Psa. 136; 57:10; et al.). God is a God of Wrath (Rom. 1:28; Heb. 10:31; et al.). Each member of the Godhead equally retains and shares these attributes/qualities of God.

5 The Godhead …We Must Understand That There Is One God!
Belief in the God of the Bible is monotheism and not polytheism. The Bible teaches clearly, repeatedly and firmly that there is only one God! There is one “God,” but that is not the “name” of His personality but of His nature. To be “God” necessitates being divine in one’s nature and one’s quality. There exists only one divine Being possessing the one divine nature – there is only God! That divine nature is not divided but is equally retained and shared by the one God.

6 The Godhead The Bible Student Must Understand What the Bible Teaches about the Godhead. First of all, it would be helpful to define some terms. The Bible teaches that: There are three divine (and distinct) personalities (Father,Son,Holy Spirit), who each fully share the one (i.e., the same) divine nature, and who exist and function in complete unity as One. Each member of the Godhead is equally, distinctly and totally God. There is one divine nature; three distinct personalities possess the nature. The divine plurality is taught in the Old Testament. The Old and New Testaments both emphasize the unity of the Godhead, while at the same time emphasizing the plurality of the Godhead. The O.T. frequently uses plural nouns with singular verbs. The O.T. frequently uses the second person plural pronoun for God.

7 The Godhead The Bible Student Must Understand What the Bible Teaches about the Godhead. The divine plurality is taught in the New Testament. The triune nature of the Godhead is made known in the N.T. The three persons of the Godhead are spoken of together & yet separate. There are distinctions made between the Father and the Son There are distinctions made between the Son and the Holy Spirit. There are distinctions made between the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that each member of the Godhead is equally divine. Each is eternal. Each is God. Our inability to fully comprehend a Bible subject does not nullify its truthfulness. Each created. Each is omnipresent.

8 The Godhead The Bible Teaches That Jesus Christ Is God.
The summary of the whole Bible is Jesus Christ. Jesus is God. Jesus is eternal. Jesus is fully divine. Jesus is the Creator. Jesus is Jehovah. Jesus is Deity. Two key passages help Bible readers to know who Jesus is. John 1:1-3, 14 Philippians 2:5-11

9 The Godhead The Bible Doctrine of the Godhead Demands a Response.
As God’s creation, we must acknowledge Him and believe in Him (Heb. 11:6; John 8:24). As God’s creation, we must submit to Him and obey Him (Col. 3:17; Matt. 28:18-20). As God’s creation, we must worship Him (Matt. 4:10; John 4:23- 24; Rev. 22:9). As God’s creation, we must love Him above everything else (Deut. 6:4-5; Mark 12:29-32).
