1. Jehoiakim’s Knife Jeremiah 36
Jehoiakim was the son of the good king Josiah
Jehoiakim was an evil king
(2 Chronicles 36:5), “Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God.”
Jeremiah’s Prophecy (Jeremiah 36:1-8)
The scroll was read to the princes in the King’s house, who brought it to the attention of the King
The King’s hears the reading of the scroll and responds (Jeremiah 36:20-26)
Didn’t like what he heard, took a knife to it!
(KJV – penknife; NKJV – scribe’s knife) Hebrew word indicates a razor or sharp knife

2. What Did Jehoiakim Accomplish with the Knife?
He didn’t rid himself of God’s prophecy!
(Jeremiah 36:27-28)
You can take a knife, and cut out the parts of the Bible you don’t want to consider
The words remain!

The words that teach the lifetime covenant of marriage
(Romans 7:2), “For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.”
The words that proclaim Jesus as the unique Savior of mankind
(John 4:24), “Jesus said to him, " I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
The words that teach the necessity of Baptism
(Mark 16:16), “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
The words that promise condemnation to the rebellious
(2 Thessalonians 1:8-9), “in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power”

3. What Did Jehoiakim Accomplish with the Knife?
He did bring destruction upon himself, and the rebellious people!
(Jeremiah 36:29-32)
The purpose of the scroll was to bring repentance.
“It may be that they will present their supplication before the Lord, and everyone will turn from his evil way. For great is the anger and the fury that the Lord has pronounced against this people” (36:7)
By refusing God’s word, Jeoiakim brought upon himself the fury and anger of God!
(2 Chronicles 36:5-8), “Jehoiakim was twenty- five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God. 6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him in bronze fetters to carry him off to Babylon. 7 Nebuchadnezzar also carried off some of the articles from the house of the Lord to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon. 8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the abominations which he did, and what was found against him, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. Then Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place.”
People taken away into Babylonian captivity
So shall it be to all who do not take heed to the admonitions of the Lord!
(Proverbs 10:29), “The way of the Lord is strength for the upright, but destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.”

4. Many men have taken their knives to God’s word. What about you?

(Revelation 22:18-19), “For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book:If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
May we never be guilty of destroying, altering, or ignoring God’s word!
