2 EOCT Logistics I’m getting you prepared now because I don’t want to hear your complaints— The test takes three days and has long passages The test is given during your regularly scheduled block All bookbags and large purses have to be placed in the front of the room within eyesight when you come in You cannot use the bathroom until I have collected all of the tests There will be no food or drink until I have collected all of the tests You cannot get water until I have collected all of the tests Your phone/mp3/iPod must be turned OFF- not on vibrate or silent- If you cannot control yourself give it to me You cannot text, play games, turn your phone on, or listen to music until I have collected all of the tests You cannot read, talk, draw until I have collected all of the tests 3rd Block will go to D Lunch for two days

A modifier is a word or a group of words that give more information about the word it modifies. The blue house on the corner is for sale this weekend. Which house? Where is the house? When? Usually these modifiers are near the word they modify—but if they aren’t—they are considered Dangling or Misplaced.

Misplaced modifier: Sam bought a used car from a local dealer with a smoky tailpipe. Corrected version: Sam bought a used car with a smoky tailpipe from a local dealer.

Dangling modifier: Sitting in the dentist’s chair, the sound of the drill made Larry sweat. Corrected version: As Larry was sitting in the dentist’s chair, the sound of the drill made him sweat.

Which of the following sentences are written correctly? Covered with cobwebs and mold, we cleaned the cabinets with bleach. Covered with cobwebs and mold, bleach was used to clean the cabinets. The cabinets were cleaned by us with bleach covered with cobwebs and mold. We cleaned the cabinets with bleach because they were covered with cobwebs and mold.

Parallelism is giving items in a list or a comparison the same structure. Incorrect- I asked for ham and eggs, coffee and cream, and butter on my toast. Correct- I asked for ham and eggs, coffee and cream, and toast with butter. Noun Conjunction Noun

Passive Voice If a sentence has an action verb—make sure that it is clear that the subject is completing the action of the verb. Passive: The water was gulped by the athlete in one thirsty motion. Active: The athlete gulped the water in one thirsty motion.

There are three modes of writing Expository Argument/Persuasion Narrative These are all structured in a way that benefits the author’s message usually  Main Idea & Supporting Details, Chronological Order, Cause and Effect, Comparison/Contrast etc. Author’s always consider their audience when choosing language!!!! They also decide on sources that best benefits their message Review: Primary Sources? Secondary Sources?

Authors have to properly quote others— (MLA Format): In-text Example: Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263). Corresponding Works Cited Entry: Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads. London: Oxford U.P., Print.

Authors have to include a Works Cited Page with a List of Sources: Books Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Example Gleick, James. Chaos: Making a New Science. New York: Penguin, Print. Periodicals Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication. Example: Buchman, Dana. "A Special Education." Good Housekeeping Mar. 2006: Print.

Authors have to include a Works Cited Page with a List of Sources: Web Source Format: Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). “Article Name.” Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher). Date of last update. Medium of publication. Date of access. Examples: Bernstein, Mark.
