1 10th ANNUAL STUDENT RESEARCH POSTER COMPETITION - 2018
UWM COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES 10th ANNUAL STUDENT RESEARCH POSTER COMPETITION THE ROLE OF SENSORS IN INTERNET OF THINGS – FROM FUNDAMENTAL TO APPLIED RESEARCH Prof. Jacques du Plessis, SOIS Raunak Khaitan, CEAS

2 RESEARCH Fundamental Research Applied Research Foundation of a concept
Exploring the essence Driven by curiosity Practical approach Problem Solving Raises new fundamental queries Underlying Basis for Product Development Applied development exposes need for -> Theoretical Work Fundamental exploration “You can study broken bones all your life but you will never discover X-Rays”

3 METHODOLOGY Comprehensive Research on Sensors
Represent all sensors in an inclusive tree structure. Explore key societal challenges and issues Identification of existing sensors and sensor technologies Exploring innovative potential based on fundamental research Fundamental Research Applied Research

4 Drafting innovative solutions based on fundamental research
S W O T Analysis Applied Research (Anticipated) Entrepreneurial prototyping.

5 SENSOR TREE

6 SAMPLING OF EXAMPLES etc.
Healthcare Helping ‘completely’ blind people to navigate on streets confidently and comfortably. Transportation Making Aviation safer and more efficient by projecting future air traffic, ensuring better safety while crowding the air space. ADDRESSING MAJOR ISSUES IN THE SOCIETY etc.

7 WHY HEALTHCARE? WHY BLIND POPULATION?

8 Healthcare Example: Navigation for ‘Completely’ Blind People
Problem Statement: How to make navigation efficient for ‘completely’ blind people? Present Technology: Video Calls (Ex: bemyesyes.org) Personalized Calling Support (Ex: aira.io) Exchanging thoughts through voice messages and pictures (Ex: bespecular.com) For people with ‘low’ vision: OxSight - Dr. Stephen Hicks, University of Oxford eSight Eyewear (eyesighteyewear.com)

9 3D Mapping (like LiDAR technology)
Smart Glasses Concept 3D Mapping (like LiDAR technology) A smart glass for the blind that helps navigate them by recognizing objects nearby by emitting sonar beams and transmitting the same using a earphone and guiding a blind person on the streets.

12 Emitting Frequency from the Sender/Receiver
Travelling and hitting the Object Received back by a system System interprets data collected and converts into a form that can be heard and understand. Converted information can be heard through an earphone.

13 SWOT ANALYSIS Strength Weaknesses Opportunities Threats
Helping blind people navigate without involvement of a third person. Increasing the efficiency of locating obstacles. Coupled with Google Maps helps navigate long distances through online mapping. Weaknesses Not suitable for people who are both blind and deaf. It’s real time. Turbulence with network connectivity can hider the entire process. Not suitable in countries like India, where street mapping is not proper and lacks law enforcement. Opportunities Real time application will reduce efforts and time required to connect to a call center specialist. To help perform complex tasks like climbing up the stairs. Threats Scaling down the technology to fit into a spectacles frame. Competitors that work to actually make people with low vision see things around. Prioritizing objects that are encountered. Customers reaction and Price Policy

14 CONCLUSION From Fundamental to Applied Research
Innovate to address social issues and challenges Using fundamental research to foster innovation Future: Continue work on fundamental research to develop new ideas. Anticipated: Building prototypes for solving the issues, research paper, a course for entrepreneurs and researchers.
