What is UMBC The University of Maryland Baltimore County
One of the three research campuses in the University of Maryland System Ranked in top tier of nation's research universities--Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive -- by the Carnegie Foundation Has 500 full time and 335 part time faculty, 10K undergraduate and 2K graduate students Located in suburban Baltimore County, between Baltimore and Washington DC. Special focus on science, engineering, information technology and public policy with ~$80M in external research funding in 2003 11/16/2018

7
Human Evolution? Pervasive Computing aims to embed computing into our lives, making it as natural as using other ordinary objects like pen, paper, and cups and available anytime and anywhere. 11/16/2018

Pervasive Computing “The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it ” – Mark Weiser Think: writing, central heating, electric lighting, … Not: taking your laptop to the beach, or immersing yourself into a virtual reality 11/16/2018

A Typical CoBrA Use Case
Alice in Wonderland* Alice enters a conference room The broker detects Alice’s presence B The broker negotiates privacy policy with Alice Policy says, “can share with any agents in the room” A B The broker builds the context model Web The broker knows Alice’s role and intention + * Our intelligent meeting room 11/16/2018

A Typical CoBrA Use Case
Alice in Wonderland The broker informs the subscribed agents B A The projector agent wants to help Alice The projector agent asks slide show info. B The broker acquires the slide show info. B Web The broker informs the projector agent B The projector agent sets up the slides 11/16/2018

(1) Trauma Pod A DARPA-sponsored project to enable a future generation of unmanned medical systems to save lives on the battlefield A Trauma Pod will have no human medical personnel on-site to conduct the surgery and will be small enough to be carried by a medical ground or air vehicle. A human surgeon will conduct procedures from a remote location using teleoperated surgical manipulators with support from automated robotic systems Phase 1 will perform an unmanned surgical procedure within a hospital OR space. 2020: Automated Trauma Pod treats wounded soldiers on the battlefield. 2005: da Vinci Surgical Robot 11/16/2018

UMBC’s role in Trauma Pod
Our role focuses on using RFID technology to track the location and use of medical tools and supplies in the OR And to integrate this information with Legacy supply chain systems Hospital and patient records 11/16/2018

ORs will be data rich CAST
Drugs RFID RFID CAST Tools RFID Patient Monitors Staff ORs will be awash in low-level data, much of it noisy or incomplete Challenges include coping with the noise and interpreting the low-level data to recognize high-level events and activities 11/16/2018

Ongoing research issues
Languages for devices to exchange and share information using common vocabularies User configurable policies for trust and privacy Context aware systems that can anticipate the needs of users and act in advance by “understanding” their situation Intelligent middleware and agents to Sense, acquire and share context knowledge Reason about and maintain consistent context knowledge Enforce policies for security, trust, safety & privacy 11/16/2018

Wearable computing A new form of human-computer interaction with small body-worn computing components Always on, always ready, always accessible Supporting hands busy and eyes busy interactions Not hand held devices, laptop computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs). Will lead to a new form of synergy between human and computer, characterized by long-term adaptation through constancy of user-interface Good for monitoring a person’s activities, context and medical condition. 11/16/2018
