List of place value books. Number concept books as precursor

4 Station Structure Connections
M.A.T.H. great for H: Hands on B.U.I.L.D great for U: Using Manipulatives Good idea to have Place Value stations all year…NBT have consistently been weak performing standards, especially in upper grades.

7 Estimate and Count Collections
Have 8 ziplock bags containing collections of 0-40 counters (different objects.) Label each bag with the name and picture of the collection. Partners take turns choosing a bag. Each partner records the name of the bag and an estimate of the total. Together the students organize the contents of the bag into “10” cups and “leftover.” Then the students use the math talk card to describe and record the number of objects in the collection. Use pg. 254 for the recording sheet. Math Talk: “There are ____ groups of ten and ____ leftover ones.”

8 Build a Number Use number cards Students work in partners and each chooses a number card from the stack. Students work together with those two numbers to do any of the following: Build each number using only tens and leftover ones. Draw a picture to show work and record the number in expanded form. Build the largest number. Build the smallest number. Compare the numbers using greater than and less than. Write a number sentence to go with < > or =. Build and record the number that is 10 more. Build and record the number that is 10 less. Find the difference between the 2 numbers. ** When using limit the number of cards in the deck so students aren’t overwhelmed.**

9 100s Chart Puzzles Cut apart 100s boards to create a variety of puzzles. Begin with boards cut horizontally and vertically then move into bigger chunks of different shapes. Students can build the 100s puzzle on top of a blank 100s board. **100s Boards Unit will be sent in .**

10 Rounding Bingo Provide 2 laminated Bingo cards. Students use Expo to fill in the boards with numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 in random order. Provide two number cubes one with numbers 1-5 and one with numbers Students take turns rolling dice to make a number. The student then rounds that number to the nearest 10 and marks it on his Bingo board. Students should use math talk card while completing. Use pg. 260 for the recording sheet.

11 Compare Numbers Compare Numbers or Students use two numbered dice (numerals 1-6 or 4-9) and roll them to create a 2 digit number. Students build both numbers created from the 2 digits with Unifix cubes. Students compare the two numbers and tell which is greater, how many more, and how they know that. Students record their thinking in a book at the station. Use copies of pg. 258 to create the book.

12 Monopoly Money Challenge
Use monopoly money in one, ten, and hundred dollar bills. Use 15 one hundred dollar bills, 25 ten dollar bills, and 50 one dollar bills. Put the money in a brown bag. Each student reaches in the bag and removes three bills at a time. They then add up the amount they grabbed and whoever has the most money gets to keep both players’ money. Each student keeps track of their money by placing it on a hundreds, tens, and ones place value mat. Play continues until someone gets $999 or they use up all the money.
