4
Practical experiences
Importance to do before we record. 10 Workstations covering different areas. If you do/experience then you will remember
5
Mathematical language
6
Written work Practical experience must come first Shows understanding Promotes independent learning Can spot misunderstanding Promotes thinking skills Promotes problem solving skills Symbols of mathematics
7
Workshop 1 Handling data
-Sorting -Carroll diagram -Venn diagram -Graph Station: Practical Carroll Diagram (e.g. button, not button), sorting objects for different criteria, pasta shapes Language: same, different, sort, why? How?, table, group

Recommendations for parents
Counting (0-10, 10-0, missing numbers) you could use number cards, post-its with numbers written on them etc. Use a number line at home (count along using your finger, moving on to adding using a number line) Use the number line for number recognition Number formation (on paper, whiteboards, in the sand) Making sets of numbers (hold up a number or say a number and ask them to set out the correct amount, you can use toys, counters, pennies anything) Numbers and shapes in the environment (day to day spotting of things or you could even go on a number or shape hunt) Counting out pennies for certain amounts (nice to play shops here, decide on prices for their toys and take turns being the shop keeper and customer, we just work with 1ps in primary 1) Questioning Why? How much? Which is heavier? Who is taller? Who is the smallest? What is longer than your thumb? etc.
29
Recommendations for parents cont.
Games (snakes and ladders, dominoes, shops, games that involve using a dice, number cards, commercial games Orchard toys have a good range) Look at the time on the clock at the o’clock time. Talk about times of the day, morning, afternoon and night, days of the week, months of the year Give directions (go forward then turn etc.) Make patterns with objects and colours Practical adding and taking away (you can use objects, sweets) Measure things using objects (e.g. paper clips, lego) How many paper clips long is your shoe?) Use language of numeracy (see previous slides)
