Design Question 8 - Element 37: What does the teacher do to indicate affection for students?

2 Before we begin… Before we begin talking about element thirty-seven, let’s be sure that there is an understanding about how the elements in Design Question 8 are related. This is important as you plan your lessons. Directions: watch the video on the next slide. Please take notes, documenting how the elements in Design Question 8 are related.

4 How do the elements in Design Question 8 relate to each other?
You should have noticed that: Elements 36, 37, and 38 are intertwined. The overall goal of Design Question 8 is for student to feel like they are a part of a community. These three elements work in tandem to ensure that the desired effect is achieved. Teachers can utilize the strategies related to each of these elements to develop and maintain effective relationships with students. Now let’s talk about element 37, specifically.

7 Desired Effect in the Students
The desired effect is, “students’ perceptions of acceptance and sense of community are enhanced as a result of the teacher using verbal and non-verbal behaviors that indicate affection for students..” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must monitor and make accommodations so that every student in their classroom achieves this desired effect.

8 Task While watching the following video, identify:
The strategy the teacher uses to indicate affection for each student. The message this conveys to the students. 9 Video Questions Q: What strategy does the teacher use to indicate affection for students? A: The teacher stands at the door as the students file out one by one. As each student passes he checks their progress on the objective for class that day, but also nods and smiles at each student. Q: How does this make the students feel? A: This practice promotes a positive feeling among students and hopefully they feel as though their teacher really likes and cares for each of them. Q: What other strategies could be used to indicate affection for students? A: Teachers could compliment students regarding their academic or non-academic accomplishments, target specific students who may feel alienated to find something to compliment that student about, have informal discussions with students about their lives, use humor when appropriate, small, nod, or pat students on the shoulder.

10 Task While watching the video, identify the behaviors of the teacher that indicate affection for the students. After watching the video you will be asked to identify the teacher and student evidence to rate the teacher on this element.

15 How to Rate Teacher and Student Evidence
The teacher compliments students on their academic and personal accomplishments. The teacher praised the students for their work in literature circles for the first time. She also complimented one of the students on a clever comment. The teacher engages in informal conversations with students that are not related to academics. The students and the teacher were having conversations about the weather. The teacher uses humor with the students when appropriate. The teacher called the students sadists in a humorous manner. The teacher smiles, nods, etc. at the students when appropriate. The teacher smiled and nodded at the students throughout the video. The students respond to the teacher’s verbal interactions. At certain points on the video the students’ laughter can be heard in response to their teacher.

17 How we Rated the Teacher
We rated this teacher as applying. She clearly uses both verbal and nonverbal behaviors that indicate caring for students. She is consistently scanning the classroom and making eye contact with students to monitor for evidence of the quality of relationships among the majority of students. From the video it is difficult to tell whether she has monitored all students for the desired effect. Otherwise, this teacher may have received an innovating rating.
